The Wonder of The Ocean

With the rising integration of technology into children’s day to day lives, I felt there was an opportunity to incorporate digital learning into classroom sessions and as part of a child’s homework.

I set myself the following brief:

  • create a 10 minute microlearning.

  • using a responsive platform so the microlearning can be accessed on a tablet device.

  • Language and interactions should be appropriate for ages 6 - 8, but support from adults is required to ensure understanding.

I opted for the ocean habitat as my subject matter as I felt the content was suitable for the age group.

I knew I wanted the microlearning to be visually striking, therefore planned to incorporate a range of custom illustrations and media elements.

2026 refresh

As we now have the option to create and upload custom code into Rise, I felt this course could do with a little refresh. Whilst I had initially used Storyline blocks to create a lot of the enhanced interactivity within this build, these blocks do not translate well over to other devices and can look a bit clunky. I wanted to use this as an opportunity to update not only the functionality but visual design too, incorporating the ocean theme more into the activities.

So what’s different?

1. Animated header - the phrase 'the Ocean' now bobs gently on the waves.

2. Subtle enhancements to graphics - I've incorporated more of the ocean theme into some of the more static text blocks. For example the life rafts accompanying the introductory text.

3. Code replaces Storyline blocks - Aside from just switching out functionality, I've also amended some of the activities to present them in a way that feels more fitting with the theme. For example the message in a bottle quiz and the pressure gauge.

4. Audio throughout - now that we have AI text to speech, I've added voiceover to accompany most paragraphs of text. This supports young readers. (the demographic for this eLearning is primary age children)

Pre 2026 refresh

The images and context below all relate to the original build of the course, before it received a refresh in 2026.
